On October 8th, 1920, Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington. A bright child growing up, he knew from an early age that he wanted to become a writer. As a teenager, he began working for a local newspaper, and later became a full time reporter, before eventually trying his hand at science fiction.

I remember that when the movie hit my local cinema in a small town in Louisiana the ushers handed out one-page glossaries so that patrons weren't lost in the terms or names. I think I still have the hand-out somewhere. But it made me want to read the books even more.
