This is excellent, Andrew. I want to use Astrolabe as a way to life up other voices and signal boost, so I appreciate the insight you've got here, and might do something similar.
Ah, thanks for the heads-up about Babylon 5. I'm looking forward to checking that out. I was wanting to do a selective re-watch after the news of Mira Furlan's death on the 20th -- her final message on her website is as beautiful and eloquent an epitaph as one could hope for.
And speaking of SF/F I was obsessed with in the 90s, I'm reeling between very cautious optimism and full-on fangirl enthusiasm about Netflix's casting announcements for Gaiman's The Sandman....
You'd have a clean case for appealing to people as a Best Semiprozine nominee. A publication that has some freely available issues, but the rest require a subscription, doesn't seem in the spirit of the Best Fanzine rules to me.
Great news about Babylon 5; maybe it's time for me to pick it up?
I'd love to read a future newsletter outlining the background to the High Republic books. I'm intrigued but don't quite know the background or what groundwork they're laying.
I do have a piece planned about the High Republic and LFL’s history with big, overarching projects like the NJO. It went a bit on the back burner as I started working on terrorism stuff.
I haven’t actually read anything from Charles Saunders, but I’m on the lookout for his stuff.
Thanks Andrew, I think the proposed changes sound great. And if anyone is on the fence about subscribing, just do it. The extra content is fantastic.
This might be a bit off topic, but maybe it can be a subscriber post at one point... I’m really interested in *how* you read, and getting your thoughts on the act of reading. You seem to prefer paper books, and obviously get through a lot of books. What are your thoughts on e-readers vs. paper books? And how do you “manage” your reading schedule? I’d be very interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

I’m heartbroken about Mira’s death. Her character in B5 was such a phenomenal hero, and one that has long been a favorite.
I’ve actually never read any of the Sandman comics. I’ve had friends recommend them, but I’ve never quite gotten around to it.

Heh. The Semiprozine field always seems like a strange minefield when it comes to eligibility.

And: any Charles Saunders you'd recommend?

And yes! You should watch B5! If you don’t have HBO Max, I have all five seasons on DVD that I can lend you.

Good idea! I definitely have a process.
Awesome! Looking forward to it :)
