Thanks, Andrew. As a fellow Vermonter, I'm also sad and frustrated that the pandemic is blooming here again, too. I appreciate your reminders to be safe and stay masked.
The part about Asimov reminded me that a couple of years ago I read the first two Foundation books, as a grown woman in her forties, and I could barely get through it. But I realized that although it was explicitly about men, there question of race was not explicitly addressed (or maybe I missed something) so I immediately switched in my head to seeing all the characters as non-White races and it amused me to imagine the reaction of a certain segment of the Sci-Fi fandom (I think this was around the time of that one Star Wars movie and there was a big hullabaloo, or maybe it was the whinging about a certain character in Hunger Games, who in the book is Black, but apparently not in the minds' eyes of those fans). Anyway, I feel a bit sad that I missed out on the great enjoyment that so many people have gotten from the Foundation series. The trailer for the show looks amazing, so I'm eager to see that. But I know myself well enough to know that generally books that span multiple lifetimes are hard for me to love. And speaking of love, I did love Black Sun, quite a bit!
Also, if you get a chance, a friend and colleague just had a poem published that coincidentally goes very well with your topic, called "The Tragedy of Space Opera" inspired by her friend who said they "didn't want to die in space". (I can post a link if you like, but wasn't sure that's appropriate.)
It's frustrating, but also really predictable, which I think makes it even more frustrating. Hopefully, this will help stem the tide, and we'll get back down to manageable levels again.
I definitely think that there's a bit of a reckoning going on with Asimov and others of his time, and I'll be interested in seeing how he's treated moving forward. He's a formative writer for me, but one who's deeply flawed. I'm very eager to see what they do for the series. Stay tuned: I'll have a lot more about Asimov and Foundation before too much longer.

You stay safe, too!
